Bisti De-Na-Zin Hiker

U.S. Geological Survey Topographical Map of De-Na-Zin to Bisti Shuttle

I attach the five 8 1/2" x 11" sheets onto which I copied the USGS survey maps of the shuttle hike area.  The maps are from the 7.5 minute series, New Mexico, San Juan County:  Alamo Mesa West Quadrangle and Alamo Mesa East Quandrangle.  I carry these sheets with me on my hikes and it is at least helpful for keeping track of progress down the wash.  The pages are sequenced from east to west, as you walk.  There is some overlap between the pages for clarity.  i marked alternate routes I have walked, and drew a grid with latitude and longitude marked in approximately every half-minute.

As I mention elsewhere, the prominence of "Alamo Mesa" eludes me.  I have never been able to see any distinctive feature that would warrant naming two maps after it - not where "Alamo Mesa" is marked on the map.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can shed some light on this puzzle.
